In his book “Outwitting the Devil”, Napoleon Hill who is known as the grandfather of personal development, outlines how the devil works on people’s mind in order to get them stuck in life, without purpose and in constant suffering. This book was so controversial that it was only published in 2011, roughly 72 years after Hill wrote it. The book talks about an imaginary conversation Hill had with the devil in which he asked him several questions about how he operates in people’s lives.
When he asked the devil to introduce himself, the devil explained that he is a non-physical entity (which means he is a spiritual being) and his main goal is to cause fear in people and flood them with negative thoughts so they end up drifting in life with no purpose and doing his will without resistance. The devil also says that the universe is shared between the forces of evil (devil and his demons) and the forces of good (God and his angels). In summary, the devil provokes all the negative thoughts while God promotes all the positive thoughts and actions such as love, forgiveness, faith, etc.). Both God and the devil are spiritual entities.
The Bible and other sacred scriptures also mention the works of the devil. In the Bible, Jesus said “The thief’s (devil) purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life” (John 10:10-29 – NLV). So here Jesus is saying that he is doing the work of God which is to give people a rich and abundant life while the devil’s work is to kill and destroy people’s lives and dreams.
So, where the issue is? The problem is that many people think that the devil will come physically and hurt them. That’s not how he operates. He operates mainly in the mind by constantly feeding thoughts of fear and doubt which leads to stress, anxiety, poverty, illness, war, destruction, etc. The moment you take control of your mind, you will be resisting the devil and he will flee from you.
Back to Napoleon Hill’s book, the devil told Hill that the more control people have over their minds, the less powerful and less effective his work is. People with weak minds are the perfect target for the devil because they don’t have the strength to resists his attacks. Therefore, it’s very important to understand that the war is spiritual, not physical. Spiritual beings operate in our minds which consequently manifest in the physical world because our actions are driven by what we think or believe in. Here are some useful tips to fight the spiritual war.
Define precisely what you want from life, then create a plan to achieve it. Have a purpose and it will fuel you to keep moving. Ideally you will have a purpose that serves the good.
Be thankful and appreciate the good things of life. Avoid focusing on negative things and cultivate gratitude towards our Creator and other people.
Be always sober and self-aware so you can detect when the negative thoughts are knocking on the door of your mind. Keep guard and do not allow them to get in.
Be self-disciplined and organized. Manage your time and money with all wisdom and don’t waste time and energy with things that are not productive.
Remember always that your dominant thoughts trigger emotions and actions. What you think will manifest, so make sure that all or most of your thoughts are positive and focused on good things.
Remember that you were made in the image of God which means you have power within you to fight the negative thoughts provoked by the devil.
Also remember that, according to the Bible, if we have enough faith, we can move mountains. We can even beat death if we have the faith for it. So why live in fear and doubt when we have all this power given to us by God when He created us in his image?
