You may be familiar with the following quote by Albert Einstein.
“Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds…”
It’s a fact! When you are trying to do something that really matters, you will always face critics, and the bigger the thing you are trying to accomplish, the bigger is the opposition. This applies to everyone. There is no one single successful people who will tell you that they didn’t face violent opposition. Just read their story and you will see what I mean. There are plenty of information you can find online.
As an entrepreneur, you will always face challenges and opposition, and if you don’t develop a thick skin, you will just give up. Developing thick skin means being resilient and emotionally prepared to deal with critics and opposition. It happened to me, so believe me, I know what I’m talking about.
I tried several ventures in the past which didn’t work out and I always wanted to blame my partners. It took me a while to realize that the problem was me. I just wasn’t emotionally prepared to face oppositions and to persevere until I get what I wanted. My emotions always took control of me, and I would end up fighting and giving up. I had great ideas, but just didn’t have enough resilience to implement them regardless of the challenges.
Any motivational speaker or coach will tell you that resilience is very important, not only in business, but in life itself. This world is not for the faint of heart. If you want to achieve greatness, you must develop a thick skin. That doesn’t mean you will not feel fear and other emotions. They will always come, but what matters is what you do with these emotions. Having a thick skin means you won’t let those emotions take control of you. Instead, you control them, and you use them as a fuel. I know this is easier said than done but if other people can do it, why can’t you do it?
In my opinion, developing resilience starts with self-awareness. You must know yourself and what triggers your emotions. Is it a trauma from when you were a kid? Is it insecurity? Why do you feel insecure? Was it because you were bullied as a kid? Was it because your parents always told you that you wouldn’t achieve anything in life? Is it a religious belief hurting your conscience?
You need to figure out what is holding you back and face it head on. No one will do it for you. You have to take the step and work hard towards your self-improvement and becoming the best version of yourself. Reading books of self-improvement or having a mentors would be a possible solution. Finding your purpose in life will also give you enough fuel to face challenges and help keep your eyes on the prize. Having roles models and studying what they have done to overcome their fears and face challenges can also be a powerful tool.
By now, I believe you understand why it’s important to be resilient if you want to succeed in your entrepreneurial ventures. Of course, you must develop other skills as well, but being resilient will play a big role when tough times come. I’m not going to sugarcoat it for you. Problems and challenges will always come. However, no matter how hard the challenges are, if you are resilient enough, the problem will become just an inconvenience and an opportunity to learn and evolve.
